Mater's Cabin

Let me tell you about my brother Mater. I'm sure you are thinking, "Mater?? What kind of name is that?"
Obviously it's his nickname but very fitting. If you've seen the movie Cars you'll know Mater is the rusted out, redneck tow truck in the film. Right after the movie came out in theaters my brother's friends all came to school calling him Mater, well, because my brother is just like Mater.

(BTW - if you search Facebook for Mater's Words of Wisdom you'll find his videos of redneck wisdom. He's the next Duck Dynasty!!)

Anyhow, my Mater is the youngest of us seven kids and I'm the oldest. I left for college when he was only 3 years old and he doesn't even remember me living with him. We lived and romped in the woods and while we were visiting Mater helped the boys carve their names in a beech tree that all my brothers had carved their names in.

Half a mile from where we grew up lived our grandparents. Grandpa woods butted up against our woods and we roamed through both freely. When I was in about 6 or 7 my grandparents moved a log cabin from a few miles away to it's current location, restored and renovated it. Grandpa died almost 10 years ago and Grandma died about 4 years ago. In the last years of Grandma's life and the time it took to settle the estate the cabin has fallen into some major disrepair. I, and I'm sure many of my cousins, would have loved to take over the cabin but for most of us it just wasn't possible. Mater however is young and single and needed a home of his own so he's bought the cabin and is fixing it up.

While we were home in Indiana Mater, our other brother John Deere and some of his buddies were putting on a tin roof. Some of the logs have rotten away on the opposite side of the house and Mater was telling me how there's just no way to keep it uncovered much longer though he'd like to. He's going to replace the rotten logs and eventually put siding on the outside to protect the rest of the wood from rotting and insects. I'm pretty sure that's how Grandpa found it in the 80's covered in siding.

The inside is still in pretty good shape though. My family has done a HUGE job of cleaning out the house. Grandma had a lot of stuff! They've ripped up carpets and cleaned, cleaned, cleaned!

My favorite part of the cabin is the chimney/fireplace. When Grandpa was restoring the cabin he hired someone to dig a basement and build the fireplace/chimney. I can remember my sisters and cousins and I taking our little red wagon into the cornfield and filling it with rocks. Then we'd haul it to the cabin where the chimney guy would sort through them and pick out the ones he thought would work. Grandma had some stones that she and Grandpa had collected on their travels put into the fireplace.

I got to go with Grandma and Grandpa to Missouri to pick up this stuff. Ha, it was pretty to look at but I also remember Grandma complaining that it was awful to bake anything in!

Though the inside of the house is in fairly good shape there is this spot of water damage in the kitchen. Mater may need a house but he's still got a ways before he can move in!

Who's that gorgeous baby with the enormous bonnet?
Me!

Grandma's biggest prize from the county fair is still on the wall.

It was so much fun growing up down the road from the cabin. I'm sure we were in the way but my sisters and I got to see it all done; moving the cabin, sandblasting it, Grandpa putting in the electricity, Grandma wallpapering. I imagined being Laura Ingalls walking into the cabin. There was always a sense of going back in time when we visited. Grandpa gave us a little adventure right down the road.

Something Wonderful to See.

I saw something wonderful yesterday.

Here it is.

Big brother reading to little sister.

What's even better he sought her out and asked if he could read a book to her.

I've been waiting for this moment since the day she was born.
Amazing how much him reading to her helps me out.

Lego Boats and hoping for Glory

My boys received their free Lego Club Magazine this week! Man what a hit it's been, they love getting this magazine! This month the mag featured Lego boats made by fellow Lego lovers. As soon as they saw that page my boys rushed downstairs to their pile of Legos. If other kids could get photos of their creations in the magazine why couldn't they?

They worked and worked and begged me to take pictures of their boats before they left for school.

Yip's boat full of Harry Potter figurines and weapons, ha, go figure.

Hee hee. Yap and I tried taking a picture of him while looking in the camera.
I took 6 pictures and he blinked in every one!

Yap's ship is much more like a warship which makes sense since he wants to be a soldier.

The boys are very proud of their creations and so am I. I just love it when they get so excited about making something.  After posting I'm off to figure out how to submit their photos to the magazine.

Oh, and not to be left out....

...Yahoo saw that her brothers were getting pictures with their toys and insisted on a pic of her and Barbie.
Oh Barbie, when are you going to learn this isn't a nudist colony?

Conflict Resolution

Fighting Brothers....

Time Out until you two can solve the problem!!

"How about we..."

"Or what if we....."

"Would you help me with...."

"Sure I'll help you, but you can you share that....."

"Wow, I never thought of doing it that way."

"Whoa, this whole talking it out thing really works. Mom, can we play now?"

Amazing what happens when they actually communicate!
Grrrrr...

Thank God for Lost Luggage!

Last week DR and I flew to Kansas for a job interview within his company. (Interview is a multi-step process and I'll fill you in on the outcome.) His corporate office made all the travel arrangements and, on paper, it was wonderful. We were to leave Champaign, IL at 8am on Tuesday, land in Chicago with a short layover and arrive in Wichita around 1:30. After picking up the rental car we were to drive to Montezuma, Kansas which was about a three hour drive and begin the first interview around 4 or 5 pm.  Wednesday morning we would leave Dodge City by plane around 11 am and land in Kansas City for a second interview, fly to Chicago then on to Champaign and be home late Wednesday night. Overall a quick and easy trip.

We make Plans...and God laughs!

HA! Here's what really happened. We arrived in Champaign, board the plane but are taken off after ten minutes. A severe storm went through Chicago and delayed everything by 2 hours. Back at the gate we expected a long wait but twenty minutes later were back on and landed in Chicago at 9:30 am. Our connecting flight to Wichita was scheduled to leave at 11:00, was delayed then cancelled. But DR rushed and was able to get us another flight to Wichita on a different airline that left at noon. But it was delayed till 1:20 and we finally arrived in Wichita at 3:30. Only to find out....we had no luggage. However there was the possibility, we were told, our luggage might arrive in an hour on the next flight. We took our chances and stuck around because I was in sweats and DR needed clothes for his interview. Anxiously we waited and an hour later.....no luggage. We rushed out to the first store we found and bought some suitable clothes. Finally, at 5:30 we drove out of Wichita for a 3 hour drive to Montezuma and met Chet, the wonderful gentleman DR interviewed with, after dark. Because of the nature of the job position, my husband really needed to drive the countryside, talk to people and spend time contemplating the position which wasn't something he could do at night or in the few short hours Wednesday morning before we were to fly to Kansas City. Gratefully, DR's company extended our stay by an extra day and were now scheduled to get the hell out  leave Dodge City Thursday morning. We had no clothes or toiletries (or makeup!!!!) and had to hit Wal-Mart. This was turning out to be one of the worst trips ever.....but....

(Here's the part where I am truly thankful for the terrible trip.)

After spending most of Wednesday checking out the people and places we needed to see around 5 p.m. we were looking for a place to eat.....so I called my brothers. My "little" brothers, 13 and 14 years younger than me, are working and going to school in Colby, Kansas which is in the northwest part of the state; we were in the southwest part about 3 1/2 hours away. Originally we weren't going to have time to see them but with the extended stay we had some extra hours. I called my brother and asked if he was free to meet us for dinner. He told me to start driving north; he was on his way. He skipped class that night, picked up my other brother and hit the road and drove for over an hour. My husband didn't ask any questions...he just drove. After driving north, through some beautiful country, for an hour and forty five minutes DR and I met them in the little town of Wakeeny, Kansas. I was afraid the only place to eat would be the McDonald's off the interstate but we found a quiet little steak restaurant in town. It was great!

During two of the fastest hours of my life we ate and laughed, hugged and cried....well I cried anyway! I hadn't seen my brothers since Christmas and probably won't see them till next Christmas. I can't even begin to explain how happy I was to see those two and their scruffy hair. (Scruffy hair must be a Kansas thing!) I didn't want the night to end. I got to see my brothers!!

So, thank you God for lost luggage, cancelled and delayed flights and extended stays. Thank you God for reminding me to take the bitter with the sweet and to be open and flexible in all situations. The storm produced a beautiful rainbow....I got to spend time with my brothers!
