Book Giveaway - Kids Books!

Hello Again! Giving away books is getting to be a fun little Tuesday habit of mine isn't it?

Today's giveaway comes to you from my twins, Yip and Yap. One of the great things about having twins is you always have a spare. (Spare stuff, not a spare kid!)

For example, the boys' preschool teacher gives her students books all year long for Easter, Christmas, etc. And of course, we always get two copies of every book. We are giving away four kids paperback books today that we already have copies of.

Valentine Mice by Bethany Roberts, about four little mice who hand out valentines in the woods and what happens when one little mouse gets lost.

A Silly Snowy Day by Michael Coleman, about Shelley the turtle who doesn't want to hibernate! Instead she slips out to explore and learn what winter is all about...and why turtles should hibernate.

Christ the Savior is Born by Tim Wesemann, about the Nativity. Some very nice illustrations in this one.

The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle, follows a seed as it is blown across the landscape in the fall and how it changes from season to season.

Eric Carle is one of my all time favorite illustrators!

Book Giveaway - Wobegone Boy

This week's book giveaway, Wobegone Boy by Garrison Keillor. Again, couldn't find this one on Amazon but plenty of others by Keillor. If you listen to NPR or are a fan of "A Prairie Home Companion" then you probably know all about Keillor's tales of Lake Wobegone.

From the jacket cover;

This novel is about John Tollefson of Lake Wobegone who leaves for upstate New York. Free from the Dark Lutherans of his hometown, he makes a pleasant bachelor life for himself. In the midst of plenty, it occurs to John that his life lacks nobility and grace. A consumer of fine food and wine, he yet has no coherent life story. Compared to his great-grandfather John Tollefson, who finagled his way over from Norway, he feels rootless, restless, joined in no struggle, with nothing at stake. The only magnificence in his life is Alida, who eludes his courtship. Folded into the romance is the saga of his ancestors: a dour butcher, Siamese-twin ballplayers, a Texas Pentecostalist and Lake Wobegon itself with its bachelor farmers and housewives. DR and I both read this book and enjoyed Garrison Keillor's wit and humor, as always. Reading this novel, you'll feel as though you've grown up in Lake Wobegone too!

The Good Herb - Book Giveaway!

The next book giveaway, The Good Herb: Recipes and Remedies from Nature, by Judith Benn Hurley.

 

I bought this book a few years ago with the intention of starting an herb garden, drying herbs and cooking with herbs. I did start an herb bed at our last house in southern Indiana but I haven't had one since so that's why I'm giving this book away.

Not only does this book contain recipes and remedies but also lore and legend and tips for growing each herb.


Here's a bit of a teaser for you;

Broccoli and Potatoes with Dill (pg 94)

2 med. diced red potatoes
handful of fresh dill sprigs
1 1/4 cups of broccoli florets
3 minced scallions
2 t capers
2 T fresh lemon juice
1 t olive oil
1 t minced fresh dill or 1/2 t dried
fresh ground pepper

Steam the potatoes, covered, over boiling water to which you've added the handful of dill for about 5 minuters. Add the broccoli and continue steaming until the vegetables are tender, about 5 minutes more.

Tip the potatoes and broccoli into a large serving bown and add scallions, capers, lemon juice, olive oil, dill, and pepper to taste. Toss well. Serve warm as a side dish or very slightly chilled as a salad. Or use as a filling for crepes or omelettes.
