Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night....But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self controlled. 1 Thessalonians 5:1-6
My calendar tells me that Daylight Savings Time ends today! Time to set our clock backwards....or is it forwards??? I can never remember. DST always sneaks up on me twice a year and I'm never prepared. Well, there isn't much preparation other than rearranging bedtimes and naptimes for a week or so.
DST may be wonderful for the rest of the country but any mother knows DST can be havoc in a house with a napping baby or toddler!!
Paul talks about the time of Christ's return...."like a thief in the night." The word thief in this passage has always made me nervous. Of course it does! And why shouldn't it when it conjurs the image of someone sneaking into my home to catch me off guard and cause me harm. Now, I know Christ's coming is not to cause harm to those who love him but those who are not ready will spend an eternity in harm.
But it doesn't have to be that way Paul reminds us because we Christians are not of the darkness but of the Light. If we live in God's Light then we will be prepared. Christ's return will not be a surprising event but one we are ready, prepared, and looking forward to! Satan is constantly working at keeping us unprepared for Christ's return by luring us into darkness. Let us follow Paul's advice and keep alert and self controlled!
Dear Heavenly Father, Thank You for your Light in Christ Jesus. In my heart I know that He is the only Truth. Let me be ever vigilant so I may be always prepared. Amen.
