Panning at the Park

The kids, one of their friends and I went to the park the other day. Good thing I brought my camera because it was the perfect opportunity to practice panning!
Slow shutter speed + moving camera with the moving object = in focus subject, blurry background.
Well, the blurry background was easy to get but my subject wasn't much in focus.

I was really happy with the bright colors though especially our friend's turquoise shirt and shorts.

The kids enjoyed looking at their blurry selves on the camera screen, especially when it looked like their legs disappeared! Cool!!

Then we jumped on the merry go round. This was a bit easier since I didn't have to move the camera. But 5 minutes round and round and I was ready to toss my cookies! How do kids do this all day long???

Panning....deceptively simple....especially on the merry go round!

  1. LOVE the merry-go-round pictures! You are inspiring me to jump off my dang worry horse and buy my new camera! May take the plunge very soon! This looks too much fun!

  2. Those are so much fun! I haven't tried the panning motion shots yet as I am too afraid. How did you do it?

  3. It was a fairly sunny day and I set my shutter speed to 1/8 sec. and aperture to f16 and ISO 100 (probably could have done 200). Then I set my camera to take multiple shots with one press of the button. On the swings and kids running I moved my camera with them, and I tried to keep them in the middle of the frame as much as possible when looking through the viewfinder. I just kept pushing the button and taking LOTS of shots.

I'd love to hear what you have to say! I try to reply to every one of them.
