Sunday Devotions for Kids - The Sailors

Psalm 107:23-30



Others went out on the sea in ships;
they were merchants on the mighty waters.

They saw the works of the LORD,
his wonderful deeds in the deep.

For he spoke and stirred up a tempest
that lifted high the waves.

They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths;
in their peril their courage melted away.
They reeled and staggered like drunken men;
they were at their wits' end.
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble,
and he brought them out of their distress.
He stilled the storm to a whisper;
the waves of the sea were hushed.
They were glad when it grew calm,
and he guided them to their desired haven.


I've always wondered what it would be like to live as a sailor. I've always imagined it to be wonderous to see sunrises and sunsets over a crystal blue sea. To be graced with the presence of dolphins, whales and other sea creatures as my ship travels along. To have the freedom to go where you want, whenever you want. In my mind, a life at sea seems like a perfect life.

But this passage of scripture reminds me that it is far from perfect. Even a life at sea will bring unexpected obstacles. It also reminds me of how we each treat God in our daily lives.

How often do you talk to God when life is good? Some of us would answer, "Not very often." But when life is rough and we are being battered by waves from every side, often it is God to whom we turn to first asking help after we realize all of our bravery won't get us anywhere without His help.

Dear God, Thank you for the wonderous blessings you have given to us in the sea and in our lives. Help us to remember to thank You everyday and ask for you help in all matters, not only when we are being beaten by the waves. Amen.
