Sunday Devotions for Kids - Image of God

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:27

Have you ever wondered what God looks like? Is he tall or short? Is he black or white? Does God have a beard or not? Does he wear glasses? When I was little I thought about that a lot. What does God look like? Sometimes I think God must look like Professor Dumbledore from the Harry Potter movies, with a long beard, wise and all knowing.

I don't know if God looks like Dumbledore but I do know the above verse gives us a hint about how God looks.
"..in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them."

Have you ever been in a large crowd and looked around? Maybe there were hundreds of people; men, women, old and young. There were probably different colors and sizes of people in the crowd. If you had looked closer at all the people you would have noticed.....they were all the same. God created us all exactly alike. It is only in the small, unimportant details that he has made us different. The shape of our nose, the color of our eyes, the wave of our hair.

God created a proportion of our face that is exactly like everyone else. Everyone's eyes are halfway from the top to the bottom of their head. Everyone's nose is about halfway between their eyes and chin. Everyone's mouth is about halfway between the bottom of their nose and chin. All artists know these proportions and use them when drawing people.

I imagine then that God looks a lot like us with his eyes, nose, mouth and ears all in the right place and the correct proportions! I doubt his nose is above his eyes!

Although God has made us in his image, the size of our ears and the color of our skin isn't important to Him. "..in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them." The image God cares about isn't what is outside but what is inside. God gave us the ability to love and be loved...just like Him. We all have the ability to act in the ways God wants us to. Ephesians 5:15 & 17, says "Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise...do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is." The image God is concerned about is what is inside not the outside. Are we making wise choices? Are we doing the will of the Lord? Are we loving others? When we can live our life by God's will then WE PORTRAY THE IMAGE OF GOD to those around us. That is what is truly important,  showing others what God looks like through us.

Dear God, Thank you for creating us in your perfect and wise image. Help me today to portray the image of You to those around me by making wise choices and doing Your will. Amen.
